Mirror, mirror on the Wall

Mirror, mirror on the wall... Who am I?

Thoughts in the Wind

There was a time I wasn't a fan of radio but recently I've found myself stuck on one station, loving the music, news, discussion topics, everything. I'm quite impressed with the improvement of radio content.

However there's just one thing I'd like to comment on... why the fake accents??
I understand in order for one to communicate properly certain words have to be pronounced in a particular way. I also have nothing against our fresh brothers and sisters that lived abroad all their lives and cant help it.  Having a tinge of a foreign accent might be due to Western influence (e.g living/schooling abroad) which often happens, no judgement here...what I'm concerned about is our talented radio personalities who fake an unnatural accent that comes out horrible on air without their knowing.

Many radio presenters have what I call the "Brimerican" accent. It is a confused mixture of a British and American accent which leaves the listener confused as to which country he/she is in. it might seem like there is nothing wrong with this manner of speaking but in my opinion it says something deeper.

what is wrong with having a proper, articulate Nigerian accent? after all its one of the top 10 appealing accents in the world. Do we feel inadequate speaking this way? less attractive, less cool? less professional? I for one don't think its attractive at all and I think we can do much better.

Are we ashamed of being Nigerian? do we have a yearning to be foreign?

these are questions I'm just putting out there, maybe some cant help it or maybe it has worked for some in the past but I still think its a shame.

I have hope for the Nigerian accent; an articulate refined Nigerian accent. out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. if we can try to love our true accent we can possibly love and be proud of our culture. Maybe this internal change will develop into us making Nigeria a better place.
